Traces to a low-chill breeding effort by Professor E.B. Babcock at UC Berkeley in the early 1900s; the named variety was introduced around 1933 out of UC Riverside/Chaffey Junior College work for Southern California's mild winters, likely a Strawberry peach x Peento (donut-type) cross. Chill requirement only 250-350 hours - among the lowest of any peach, a strong fit for zone 8a. Zones 7-10, hardy to about -10F. Susceptible to peach leaf curl and bacterial canker (manage with dormant copper spray); bacterial leaf spot resistance not documented, treat as unconfirmed.
